Wellness Exam

The key to excellent preventative care for your horse is an annual wellness exam. This yearly exam is a good time to discuss nutrition, behavior problems, emerging disease threats, and to develop a parasite control treatment plan that is specific to your own needs.

The annual wellness exam provides an opportunity to bring your horse up to date on season-specific vaccinations and prepare for upcoming travel. Annual wellness exams are the best way to detect and treat health problems before they become serious.

Vaccinations

Annual vaccinations are crucial for your horse's overall wellbeing but choosing the right vaccinations to best suit your horse's lifestyle is just as important.

Dentistry

Routine and proper dental care is essential to your horse’s health, well-being, and longevity.

Among many benefits, proper equine dental care can prevent premature tooth loss, reduce impaction and colic, allow easier bridling, and ensure your horse is chewing their food properly and without pain (which is essential for proper digestion).

Our advanced dental equipment allows us to perform floats both in the clinic and at your barn. Upon arrival, our veterinarian and technician will perform a physical exam before sedating your horse for the procedure. After intravenous sedation has been administered your horse will become drowsy at which time a speculum will be placed in their mouth.

This uniquely designed lightweight speculum safely keeps your horse's mouth open during the dental procedure as well as allows our veterinarian room to efficiently perform the float. A portable adjustable stand is used to assist your horse's head during the procedure.

The portable battery-powered Flexi-Float system is used to grind sharp points, even wave mouths, eliminate hooks, and smooth incisors. During this portion of the dental procedure, our veterinarian is able to determine if any extractions are necessary. After our veterinarian has finished the procedure we will wait with your horse until they are stable, sure-footed, and most of the sedation has been metabolized.

Lameness

Your horse’s mobility and ability to perform at their best is vital to their everyday life and happiness so lameness can be a major issue. Lameness is any abnormality in the gait or stance, usually caused by pain, illness, or injury of some sort.

Digital X-ray

Digital radiography (x-ray) has revolutionized Equine Medicine. We are able to quickly and easily diagnose potential causes of lameness and bone abnormalities with less stress on/for your horse.

Our cordless digital system allows us to take and view images almost anywhere. Images are available immediately and allow us to retake or take additional views quickly if needed. Digital radiography also gives us the ability to electronically send the x-rays to you, your farrier, or a board-certified radiologist for their opinion, if needed. In addition, the images produced by digital radiography are of much better quality than film radiographs and can be manipulated digitally, giving us the best possible radiographic information to help find the diagnosis.

Shock Wave Therapy

Shock wave therapy is a noninvasive, high-energy, pressure wave treatment. This treatment aids the body in relieving pain and improving the quality and speed of healing.

Rest assured, the term “shock wave” does not refer to electrical shock. It is, instead, a high-energy SOUND wave treatment. This high-energy, focused pressure wave causes a biological response in treated tissue, which stimulates cells and accelerates the healing process.

The shock wave can also be used to recruit stem cells, and positively regulate inflammatory proteins associated with osteoarthritis. The shock wave is an effective treatment for a variety of conditions resulting in pain and lameness, including:

  • Tendon, ligament, and muscle injuries (suspensories; bowed tendons; muscle strains)

  • Osteoarthritis/Degenerative Joint Disease (bone spavin; hock injuries; ringbone)

  • Foot/Heel Pain (Navicular syndrome/foot lameness)

  • Wound Healing

  • Back and neck pain (kissing spine/lumbosacral pain/arthritis)

  • Bone healing/fractures (splints; stress fractures; buck shins)

We offer the leading shock wave technology by PulseVet. Our shock wave system offers various tools and energy settings for treating a wide variety of medical conditions. The focused energy increases blood supply to the treated area, causing tissue regeneration in tendons, joints, and bone. The system can be modified to treat everything from a chronic wound to osteoarthritis.

You can typically see results with 1-3 treatments. Up to 3 treatments are covered by most insurance companies. Please check with your equine insurance provider to see if your horse qualifies.
